Musings From Deepak @ DSG Consumer Partners #96

All things consumer & insurgent brands. What I am currently reading, thinking about, and reflecting upon. You can follow me on Twitter at @dishahdadpuri or follow DSGCP at @dsgcp.

I have known Kanwaljit Singh for 15+ years and we had often spoken about the need for a consumer brand-focused VC. At that time he was at Helion and I was at Beacon India. Over the years both of us started our consumer funds, Fireside in 2016 and DSGCP in 2012. Kanwal is, and will always be remembered as, one of the pioneers of Indian consumer venture capital.

DSGCP and Fireside compete but we also co-invest. Most recently Fireside joined us on the cap table at pet-focused startup Supertails. Fireside and DSGCP are also focused on helping build the ecosystem to allow founders to create India's most successful brands. I look forward to doing much more with Kanwal and Fireside, both on the deal front and more broadly in getting founders to build exciting and profitable brands.

It was great to be back in Jakarta after a 3-year covid-induced hiatus for the Deal Street Asia conference. It was packed with investors and founders. With expected GDP growth of 4.8%, amongst the highest globally, it is no wonder that investors continue to seek companies to back.

We need to focus on Asian consumers and outside of the Global North as we fight the climate crisis and an insatiable demand for animal protein.

How often do you really need something delivered in 10-15 minutes. If something is that urgent and you have not planned for it, you would be willing to pay a premium. The fact that I can order anything for quick delivery in Mumbai when I am there at virtually give away delivery rates still boggles my mind. And it is not sustainable or good for the environment.

Fast moving consumer goods industry expects the upcoming Union Budget 2023 to take measures that would enhance disposable income in the hands of consumers and improve rural infrastructure that could lead to demand generation and accelerate consumption.
